The Write Place Opens the Door to Self-Publishing
If you are one of the 82 percent of Americans who wish to someday write a book, a partnership with The Write Place may be just what you're looking for.
According to Write Place owner and published author Carol Van Klompenburg, the attempt at making a deal with a traditional publishing company is where most authors' quests to get a book in print ends. "They often receive multiple rejections," said Van Klompenburg. "Without a publisher, authors receive no feedback on their writing, no editing, no layout or design services, and have no way to have their book printed and bound."
The Write Place can provide aspiring authors with those services. "While we leave the marketing of the book to the author, we handle many other tasks associated with publishing, including editing and proofreading, layout, cover design, and printing," said Van Klompenburg.
An advantage of working with The Write Place is the flexibility to choose the services that match your needs. Van Klompenburg cites a recent publishing success: The Reel Adventures of a Marion County Angler by Jeff Rowland. "We provided Jeff with a price quote for the entire project, including proofreading and editing. He decided to save money by asking his daughter and his former English teacher, to proofread. The Write Place took it from there-doing the layout, cover design, and printer coordination."
"I appreciated being able to work with a company right in Central Iowa," said Jeff. "The Write Place was flexible and willing to work with me to accomplish my goals."
Jeff's book has sold more than 600 copies since its publication six months ago. He said his family members are thrilled, and the book has opened doors to additional writing assignments and some local speaking engagements. But his favorite result from the publication was a thank-you letter from a U.S. soldier stationed in Baghdad. "I told my wife if the book doesn't sell another copy, this letter alone makes the project worthwhile."
For authors like Jeff, The Write Place has taken advantage of advances in the publishing industry such as print-on-demand services that make it possible to print a limited number of books at a reasonable cost. "If people want a book for their friends and relatives, they don't have to order 3,000 copies," said Van Klompenburg.
Books printed with these types of services are listed on Amazon.com and Barnes&Noble.com. The books are also available to bookstores and other retailers from a national book distributor.
The Write Place has also arranged printing with commercial printers or worked with publishing houses chosen by the author. The types of books helped into print by The Write Place vary greatly, including: retirees' memoirs, joke books, college histories, and books of poetry.
"We don't promise people they will become best-selling authors or get rich," said Van Klompenburg. "But they will have the satisfaction of seeing their thoughts in print, their dream a reality. They'll be able to hold their book in their hands and leave a legacy with the people they love."
